Magnolia Emergency Hubs
After a major disaster, city services will be overwhelmed and a network of about 60 organized Seattle Hubs, including ours, will activate in predetermined locations. One established hub is the Magnolia Village Emergency Hub, located at the intersection of 33rd Ave W and W Smith St. Just north of the village by the south playfield. A second hub is under development at the Magnolia Manor Park Emergency Hub, located at 3500 28th Ave W.
The Magnolia Hubs will activate to exchange information and to provide neighbors with a place and process to match their skills and resources with other neighbors’ needs. Our Hubs use two-way radios to get news from adjacent hubs and to support mutual aid around the neighborhoods. The Seattle Emergency Hubs network is independent of the City, but coordinates with local and regional emergency services where possible.
To help our neighborhood BEFORE a crisis, the Magnolia Hubs provides periodic drills; preparedness materials for renters, homeowners, buildings, businesses, and organizations; and free trainings, including the stocking of basic supplies like water and food, which is each person’s responsibility. We often have exercise drills to practice the hub setup, staffing, and processes of gathering and sharing information.
Magnolia Hubs are operated solely by neighborhood volunteers who plan for risk reduction and resilience. Everyone’s welcome to join us to learn and practice together. We meet once a month on the second Wednesday at the Magnolia Lutheran Church to discuss our plans for the hub. The next meetings will be at 6:30 pm, on September 9th, and October 14th.
